Our goal is to
Transform a deactivated train station in Montoito, Portugal, into a benchmark for climate resilience, plant a syntropic forest on the site and create regenerative knowledge.
Syntropic forest is an agroforestry system
We’re Elisabete and Liliana, founders of Expiry Matters, a community to develop regenerative knowledge.
The climate crisis is a
global issue and affects us all.
We started Expiry Matters by looking into new ways to contribute toward a new vision of the world that we think is possible. In the process, we felt the need to observe other views and perspectives of life on earth, to listen to different voices, and that’s why we’ve created the Expiry Matters podcast, a place where we can imagine a better future together. With these talks, we realized that all this information remains fragmented across different sectors of society. Although we see so much information around and actions being taken, they seem to be working in silos and not really connected. These conversations then lead to an opportunity to develop this new project and expand.
Where to go from here? Although the climate narrative directs us too often towards global solutions at the expense of the local, we want to connect, start local.
We have chosen the Alentejo region to go deeper into our quest for solutions. We are both Portuguese. Liliana grew up in Alentejo and we share an immense love for this region. For us, Alentejo offers the opportunity to question things. This is a rural area with the most beautiful landscapes, very rich culturally and historically, but also the region with the highest desertification and droughts levels of Portugal, with a landscape filled with monoculture farming.

We want to
Create a micro-ecosystem to explore
regenerative pathways.
With your help, we believe we can transform the Montoito inactive train station in Alentejo, into a space to learn, create and collaborate on ground-up solutions for a positive planet.
A physical and digital community, with an in-residence space for creatives, researchers, educational institutions, corporations and change-makers. A space that will also enhance experiences with nature and the local communities. All of this, while growing a forest and a legacy of regeneration.

The funds – €1.000.000
We've earned the rights to develop this project in Montoito train station, while applying to Revive Natureza program. To guarantee the station we need to raise €1.000.000 that will allow us to cover this first stage of the project. With this money, we’ll rehabilitate the train station, plant a forest on the site and create regenerative knowledge.

If we don’t reach the entire goal, we won't be able to guarantee the station, but we’ll apply the funds into rewilding projects, creating and spreading content on regenerative knowledge, in this proportion:
25% – Creating regenerative content – Expiry Matters
75% – Rewilding projects

The work will start at the moment we get to our funding goals. We have approximately two years of rehabilitation until the space becomes operational.

We don’t have yet the full list of projects we will support, but we can name a few like, Reflorestar Portugal, Quinta das Abelhas (Marc Leiber), Eternal Forest (Evgenia Emets).
